The city of New York is heading into (or has just voted in) a historic election! This metropolis, one of the largest in the US, is deciding which vision will lead it in the next term. The main contest is expected to be between the Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani (who is emerging as a Democratic Socialist), former Governor Andrew Cuomo (as an Independent), and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.

So, who do you give a chance to in this three-way race? What should be New York’s priorities, in your opinion?

As our blog readers, make your voice heard in this crucial decision! Fill out the poll below and share with us in the comments why you chose that candidate/party.

Zohran Mamdani, who would become New York's first Muslim mayor if he wins the mayoral election, is known for his harsh criticism of Israel's human rights violations in Gaza.

Mamdani has stated that if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, for whom the International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant, comes to New York, he should be arrested. He also argues that any ceasefire in Gaza must encompass the conditions of occupation, siege, and racism.

Mamdani was born in Kampala, Uganda, in 1991, into a Muslim family of Indian descent.

After graduating in 2014 from Bowdoin College in Maine with a degree in African Studies, Mamdani founded the student platform called "Students for Justice in Palestine" at the university.

Mamdani participated in a hunger strike in front of the White House in 2023 to support the call for a ceasefire and also supports the "Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS)" movement, known as the "Initiative to Boycott Israel for Palestine."

Serving as a member of the New York City Council, Mamdani won the Democratic Party's mayoral primary election held on June 24th in New York.

Emphasizing that life in New York is "too expensive and too difficult," Mamdani has also drawn attention with his solutions aimed at reducing housing and living costs.

The Republican candidate, Sliwa, who previously ran in the 2021 New York City Mayoral Election and lost to his Democratic opponent Eric Adams, is currently trailing behind Mamdani and Cuomo in the polls.

Born in New York in 1954, Sliwa is known as a radio personality and the founder of the Guardian Angels, a non-profit crime prevention organization headquartered in New York.

Sliwa draws attention with his long-standing statements supporting Israel, while focusing on public safety, combating crime, hiring more police officers, addressing homelessness, strengthening mental health services, and finding solutions for the cost of living.

Cuomo is running as an independent candidate against Mamdani after losing the Democratic mayoral primary election held on June 24th.

Born in Queens, New York, in 1957, Cuomo was educated at Fordham University and Albany Law School.

Cuomo served as the Attorney General of New York from 2007 to 2010 and subsequently served as the 56th Governor of New York State for ten years.

However, in 2021, Cuomo faced a lawsuit alleging sexual harassment for inappropriate touching of a woman in the governor's mansion. Despite denying the allegations, Cuomo resigned from office due to pressure from his own party following the sexual harassment lawsuit.

The New York Attorney General's office also conducted an investigation into Cuomo regarding allegations that he used public funds while preparing his memoir and that he manipulated COVID-19 pandemic data in the state.

Cuomo suggests that the Muslim candidate Mamdani is "inexperienced," asserting that the mayorship is "not a job that someone getting their first job can do."

While supporting a ceasefire agreement in Gaza, Cuomo frequently states his goal is to make New York safer with new police officers. However, Cuomo, who faces public criticism for his support of Israel, was also part of the legal team defending the ICC's decision to issue an arrest warrant for Netanyahu.
